Blue Ribbon Sushi

[From the 2/23/24 newsletter]

The other night we went to see Jelly’s Last Jam in concert at City Center and it was fantastic (go see it if you can!). Beforehand, we went to grab dinner and wandered into Blue Ribbon Sushi right by the Time Warner Center.

Now you sushi purists may be shocked to hear that I’m declaring a corporate entity like Blue Ribbon Sushi the best sushi bargain in New York, but if you order the Sushi Deluxe Platter for $44 (a steep price, but not for the quality), this is what you are given:

For me, this is the perfect plate of sushi at the perfect price point. I’ve been to Japan and eaten $400 sushi where the shrimp crawled up to my face before it met its end; I’ve been to hole-in-the-wall spots in L.A. where the sushi spot is sandwiched between an Office Depot and a pet supply store. This sushi at Blue Ribbon was just as good, if not better, because spending $44 on a platter this exquisite feels like money well spent.

In particular, we swooned over the fatty tuna (upper left); we plotzed over the raw scallop (middle center); and we relished the unagi, on the lower right, sweet enough to be dessert.

If you’re in NY and looking for sushi before seeing a show, look no farther. I can’t wait to go back.
