TsuruTonTan

Sometimes you need a fast, reasonably priced place to eat in Union Square; sometimes that place serves Udon.

On Friday, I met up with my pal Diana at TsuruTonTan on 16th Street at 11:30 AM and we pretty much had the place to ourselves.

Spoiler alert: the portions are huge!

We each ordered the Sukiyaki which came with Wagyu beef, mixed mushrooms, and vegetables in a sweet Sukiyaki broth.

Indeed, the broth was kind of sweet; also rich and umami-filled. The tangle of mushrooms was a bit hard to eat — I have a fear of choking, so factor that in — and the Wagyu was more on the fatty side. But the Udon noodles were nice and thick and hit the spot.

Diana and I couldn’t finish our portions, but we did a commendable job. We walked back into Union Square refreshed and ready to conquer the day, bolstered by broth and Udon.
