Le Veau d’Or
[From the 2/21/25 Amateur Gourmet Newsletter]
My birthday dinner was at Le Veau d’Or, where we went once with my parents, but I was eager to go back. We met up with my friend Jenny who you know and love from Dinner: A Love Story and our pal Chris, whose birthday we celebrated in Mexico this year.
I love the menu at Le Veau (a) because it harkens back to another era of sophisticated French food in a casual environment; (b) you pick three things for yourself and everyone gets their own stuff.
On the waitress’s recommendation, I ordered the paté en croute which was essentially paté wrapped in a puff pastry; it was as beautiful to look at as it was to eat, especially with spicy French mustard:
For my entree, I had the monkfish Bourguignon which was a surprising riff on a classic recipe (see lead pic).
Finally, for dessert, I had the crepes Suzette which were fantastic shellacked in a zingy, citrusy sauce made from Grand Marnier and real citrus:
I couldn’t imagine a better birthday dinner.
