Strange Delight

[From the 8/29/24 newsletter]

Last night we had what many couples call “date night.” For me, every night is date night because I like to make every meal an occasion, but for Craig he needs the title to justify going out to a nice/new restaurant. Hence our date night field trip to Strange Delight in Fort Greene.

Strange Delight has garnered a lot of buzz for its twists on New Orleans seafood culture. (I know a bit about that because I once went on a seafood-oriented trip to New Orleans that was sponsored by BP after the oil spill… a strange delight indeed!)

The vibe at Strange Delight is buzzy and vibrant. We were shown to our two bar seats (that’s what I reserved) in the back and were immediately greeted by the bartender who walked us through the menu. I had to try the hurricane-inspired drink with passionfruit, and it completely hit the spot.

For the food, we ordered a “small” seafood tower which came at the not-very-small price of $80.

But it was terrific with oysters, shrimp cocktail, shrimp remoulade, a smoked fish salad, and some Arctic char. Plus deep-fried crackers, the perfect seafood vessel.

We also ordered oysters Rockefeller and broiled oysters, which were done to perfection.

For the main event, we shared their version of a shrimp po’boy, which came on milk bread with giardiniera. It’s the lead pic and it was worth the price of admission alone.

There’s no dessert menu, they just gift you with bread pudding before you pay the check. A nice touch! Though my guess is they’ll be making beignets, etc., a few months down the line.

All in all, it was a lovely date night that ended with the perfect cap to a sweltering night in NYC: a viewing of Dog Day Afternoon. If you’ve never seen it, it’s a must.
